I will be heartbroken, but not surprised, if this actually gets canceled.
Network TV is driven by money, which is driven by advertising, which is driven by ratings. The lowest common denominator gets the bigger ratings, and the truly smart, truly creative, truly different shows suffer. It’s a cold, methodical way to do things, but it’s the way of the world, and I can’t blame the NBC execs for trying to get out of last place.
“Jack and Jill” made $26 million this weekend. This is not a country that wants smart, or innovative, or creative. This is a country that wants escape via the dumbest, least inventive entertainment.
I can only hope Dan Harmon and co. give this show a Viking funeral. I want to see television itself get lit on fire and ripped apart. They’re smart enough and rebellious enough to do it, ratings be damned.
Britta’d Lineup of the Day: People are rightly in a tizzy over news the NBC has decided to pull Community from its midseason lineup.
The critically-acclaimed-but-inexplicably-low-rated sitcom will be replaced by new episodes of 30 Rock starting January 12th. 30 Rock’s traditional 9:30 PM slot will be filled by Will Arnett/Christina Appelgate/Maya Rudolph vehicle Up All Night.
Meanwhile, critically-maligned-but-inexplicably-popular sitcom Whitney will move to Wednesdays, where it run in an 8-9 PM “comedy block” with the Laura Prepon-starring Chelsea Handler book adaptation formerly known as Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea.
The Hollywood Reporter says it spoke with sources who claim Community will return to NBC “at a date to be determined,” but the New York Times’ Brian Stelter says that while the show has not been formally canceled, “its chances of being renewed next year are painfully low.”
